Monthly Ceremonies

The Minnesota Judicial Branch is carefully monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak and coordinating closely with statewide partners including the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB).  In the interest of public health, the March, April, and May admission ceremonies at the Minnesota State Capitol have been cancelled.  Please contact the Lawyer Registration office at lawyerregistration@mbcle.state.mn.us for more information on how to get sworn in.

Where are the Monthly Admission Ceremonies?

State Capitol
75 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd
2nd floor courtroom
Saint Paul, MN 55155

Each applicant must check in with the Lawyer Registration Staff outside of the courtroom when arriving at the ceremony.  For ceremonies that begin at 2:00 p.m., registration is open from 1:15 until 1:45 p.m.  If you do not check in by 1:45 p.m. you will not be sworn in at that ceremony. Please be seated in the courtroom by 1:50 p.m. so that the admission ceremony may begin on time.

  • If the state government offices are closed due to inclement weather, the ceremony will not be held that month. You may either attend the next month or email the office for admission in absentia.
  • Reservations are not required but are highly encouraged.  Guests are welcome to attend.  If you know that you will be attending the ceremony, please send an email to lawyerregistration@mbcle.state.mn.us indicating the date you will be attending and the number of guests that you will have with you.  The maximum number of guests in the gallery is 40. In order to provide all candidates with the opportunity to have guests in the gallery, each candidate will be permitted 2 guests.  If there is available space in the gallery, additional guests may be seated at 1:45.  You may contact our office the day before the ceremony to find out how many candidates have registered, but because pre-registration is not required, we will not know until the day of the ceremony if additional guest seating is available.  Please plan accordingly.  Additional guests may view the ceremony on closed circuit TV.
  • You may arrive up to 45 minutes prior to the ceremony to sign your oath and pay your registration fee.  Please arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to the ceremony and be seated no more than 10 minutes prior to the ceremony so that the admission ceremony may start on time.
  • You must pay your new lawyer admission fee ($40) at the time of the admission ceremony.
  • Only cash or checks accepted.  We cannot accept credit or debit cards.
  • Cash must be exact change only. Staff DOES NOT make change.
  • Checks must be made payable to the Minnesota Supreme Court.
  • Cameras are allowed.
  • You may have a sponsor personally move your admission. A sponsor must be a lawyer in good standing. A sponsor can be a spouse, father, mother, son, daughter, uncle, aunt, in-law, or domestic partner (but not a cousin or fiancé). If you choose to have a sponsor, contact our office ahead of time so we can verify that they are in good standing prior to the ceremony.
  • Parking can be difficult.  Please plan accordingly. See a map of parking lots around the Capitol complex.
