License Status Changes

Fee Exempt – Retired Status
If you would like to file for Fee Exempt – Retired status, you must meet the requirements of the Retired affidavit. See the requirements here. If you meet the requirements, follow these instructions to request your status change:

1. Print the affidavit, then sign and date
2. Log into OASIS, click the Lawyer Registration drop down menu, then click Change Fee Status. Select Retired and upload your signed and dated affidavit. If you do not have access to OASIS, you can also email or mail the affidavit to the Lawyer Registration Office

  • You do not have to have the affidavit notarized
  • Once we process the affidavit, your status will change to Fee Exempt – Retired and your CLE status will change to Voluntarily Restricted
  • You will not receive a license card – instead you will receive a Certificate of Lawyer Registration indicating your Inactive status
  • If in the future you decide to reinstate your license, you will need to contact the Lawyer Registration Office, pay for the current year active license fees, and bring your CLE requirements up to date
Disabled Status – Fee Exempt
If you would like to file for Disabled status – Fee Exempt, you must meet the requirements of Rule 8, as outlined in the Disability affidavit. If you meet the requirements, follow these instructions to request your status change:

1. Fill out and print the affidavit
2. Sign and date the affidavit
3. Log into OASIS, click the Lawyer Registration drop down menu, then click Change Fee Status. Select Disabled and upload your signed and dated affidavit. If you do not have access to OASIS, you can also email or mail the affidavit to the Lawyer Registration Office

Notes:

  • You do not have to have the affidavit notarized
  • Once we process the affidavit, your status will change to Fee Exempt – Disabled
  • You will not receive a license card – instead you will receive a Certificate of Lawyer Registration indicating your Inactive status
  • If you decide to reinstate your license in the future, you will need to contact the Lawyer Registration Office and pay for the current year active license fees
  • Although you are on Disabled status you are still required to fulfill your Minnesota Board of CLE Requirements
Inactive to Active Status
If you are not on suspended status and want to reinstate your license from inactive to active status, log into OASIS, click the Lawyer Registration drop down menu, the click Change Fee Status. You may need to pay the difference in fees from your current fee status to your new fee status. If you are on suspended status and need assistance paying for multiple years’ of statements, please contact the Lawyer Registration Office. You will also need to bring your CLE requirements up to date by contacting the CLE office.

Resignation

Resigning from the Minnesota bar is a major professional decision and is not an effective strategy for avoiding registration fees.  If you wish to return to the practice of law in Minnesota after resignation, you will need to Petition for Reinstatement and your Petition will need to be approved by the Minnesota Supreme Court.  For additional information on Resignation and Reinstatement, please contact the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility.  A lawyer who resigns their license is not eligible to obtain a Certificate of Good Standing.  The Lawyer Registration Office can send a letter advising as to whether a lawyer was in Good Standing or not at the time of resignation.

Deceased
To update a deceased lawyer’s license to practice law, you may provide a copy of their death certificate and/or obituary to the Lawyer Registration Office.
